In 2014 Hijinx invited Blind Summit to spend a week's residency with them in Cardiff. From this week and an idea from Ben Petit Wade, we began a 2 year collaboration with Hijinx to create Meet Fred. The project combined Hijinx's skills making "inclusive theatre" with Blind Summit's puppetry expertise. Our aim was that neither be compromised in any way. The result? A show that won acclaim in Edinburgh Fringe in 2014 and continues to tour nationally and internationally ever since.
"Meet Fred is our most successful show ever!" Hijinx
Fred is a table top cloth puppet who fights prejudice every day. He just wants to be part of the real world: get a job, meet a girl. However, when he is threatened with losing his PLA (Puppetry Living Allowance), his life begins to spiral out of his control.
Hijinx are a professional theatre company based in Cardiff, Wales. They produce and create theatre that always includes actors who have learning disabilities. The company call this 'inclusive theatre' - making much of the skills and raw talent of people who often get overlooked in today’s world, giving them a platform to make and perform stunning theatre alongside actors who don’t have disabilities.
